Why do non-smokers look at smokers with such disgust these days?

because people are so well

because people are so well informed and educated on the risks of smoking, thus the thought of second hand smoke is a frightening thought. and many people are angered by those blowing smoke out in public when it's something they've elected not to do.

I know many smokers feel like

I know many smokers feel like second class citizens as people walk past them into non-smoking buildings across the country. The smoking ban has pushed smokers to congregate outside the doors of office buildings, stores and restaurants everywhere. On your journey to becoming a non-smoker, know that we ex-smokers and some non-smokers don’t hate you. I’ve been where you are, struggling with putting the habit to rest. The disgust is not directed toward you personally, it is the smoke we hate, not the smoker. I explained the answer to this question more fully in a blog post.
