Nicotine withdrawals are not the only reason people start smoking again. Nicotine begins to leave the system as soon as a few hours after quitting. While it may take a few weeks or more for the nicotine to get out of your system completely, it does eventually leave.
The problem lies with the habit of going for the smoke in certain social situations and when certain stressors happen. A bad day with the kids, a fight with your spouse or a stressful day at work can all lead you back to the pack. This is when you need a tool to help. You might want to have some mints or snacks in your purse or car ready for when you want a cigarette. Check with your doctor about other things you can do to manage withdrawal symptoms.
