Illinois Local Smoking Ban Snubbed

St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann thinks that a law with too many exemptions is not worth the trouble. He blocked a ballot referendum on a countywide smoking ban saying the law allowed too many businesses to remain exempt.

"If the purpose of the smoking ban is to protect the health of employees, there is no rational reason to exclude casino floor workers," He said during his announcement of veto. "If tobacco smoke is harmful, there is no reason to exempt cigar bars, while regulating bars that allow cigarette smoking."

Council said it probably would not have enough votes to override the veto. Council passed the bill to add the referendum to the November 2012 ballot 4 to 2 before Ehlmann vetoed the bill. Council Joe Cronin, who sponsored the bill, said that he would craft a new version that would have support of both the County Executive and Council.
