The risks of smoking are great, so great in fact that according to an England minister of public health, putting down the cigarettes is the single biggest thing you can do to improve your health.

Over half of all smokers underestimate how many people die each year, and many underestimate how much they spend on cigarettes. Nearly 60 percent don’t realize that half of all smokers suffer premature death as a result of their habit and nearly 1 in 10 smokers do not believe smoking can seriously damage their health. This is according to a NHS study in England.

Anne Milton, the Public Health Minister, said, “Quitting smoking is the very best thing you can do to improve your health this New Year.” “What's clear is that the majority of smokers want to quit smoking and free NHS help is available to help them quit for good,” she added.
