Tied Hands

Do you have a loved one that you wish would quit? Pleading doesn’t work, you’ve already tried that, but you wish there was something you could do to make them put down the cigarettes.

Unfortunately unless your loved one wants to quit, your efforts may be fruitless. That said there are things you can do to encourage your loved one once he or she has decided they no longer want to be a smoker.

  • Be the cheerleader. No matter what happens, keep a positive attitude and a forgiving spirit. This helps bring an ex-smoker out of a depressing round of failure. Tell them that you know they can do this and that one slip doesn’t mean that they can’t quit.
  • Do research. You can do research on the dangers of smoking, but better than that, do research on methods and products that help smokers quit.
  • Try setting up a reward system. This doesn’t just work for pre-schoolers. Adults, especially those being rewarded by the cigarettes they smoke, also respond with a reward system. Be sure to make it something you both agree on. Taylor the system to the smoker, for instance, for a heavy smoker every hour they are without a cigarette during the course of a day, give them a dollar. They could also reward themselves for a day of not smoking with a pint of ice cream.
  • Showing you care about your loved one’s health is one of the best ways to encourage them to quit.
