The Smoke Break

Ever wonder why when your girlfriend passes your cubical and says, “Want to go for a smoke,” you jump right up and go? It seems that everyone wants a chance to escape from the pressures at work, especially these days when pay rates are getting cut and work demands are increasing. Why would anyone say, “Nope, I’ll stay right here, I don’t need a break.”

Simply saying no is oftentimes difficult, but going out with the smokers and not smoking may be even worse. This might be one of the social and emotional reasons you smoked in the first place. You may want to go so you don’t feel left out, or you may go simply because you crave the camaraderie of others who are also longing for a break in the day.

It is very difficult, especially at first, not to join your buddies outside. But re-directing your desires at these times can make or “break” your success at quitting. Try to find other ways to connect with these friends you’ve come to know. In your chats you must have discussed other topics instead of work and smoking, try focusing on those commonalities. Tell them you don’t smoke anymore, but you’d be glad to join them for a quick walk around the building. If they turn you down, try to find someone else to go with you. You might also suggest going for a snack or drink instead.

No matter what you do, try not to stand there and watch someone else smoke. This is social and emotional torture for some new non-smokers and can put you going the wrong direction on your road to success.
