Focus on Cessation Programs

If you are thinking about easing into quitting by cutting back on how much you smoke and how often, you may want to consider a smoking cessation program. Cessation programs, while not for every quitter, are a great way to ease into being a non-smoker. In this edition of “Focus on…” we’ll talk about the types of smoking cessation program options available and what benefits they offer us quitters.

You have several choices when it comes to smoking cessation plans. Many organizations offer online message, email or chat type programs that enable the quitter to be anywhere and still benefit from the program’s system of quitting. The message and email type plans enable you to participate no matter how hectic your schedule. In-person programs offer a level of personal interaction not possible with online quit programs and many organizations offer multiple meeting times.

Joining a cessation program offers the benefits of fellowship, affirmation and understanding with and from others in a similar situation as you. While it’s certainly possible to cut back on your own, programs offer the structure that some of us need to stay on track. The American Lung Association even has a program called Freedom From Smoking that is customizable for business and hospital use.

When you team up a good cessation program with the motivation to quit and behavior modification techniques your chances of success are much greater. Develop a multi-faceted plan with your doctor and you’ll soon join the ranks of us ex-smokers.
