The Deadly Second-Hand Smoke

Second-hand smoke is also known as passive smoking or environmental tobacco smoke. It is one of the most notorious environmental hazards which have gained public health significance as it can cause cancers and many types of disease conditions.

Second-hand smoke is not an addiction. It is an involuntary action of breathing in almost 70 “free” carcinogens in the air when sitting next to a smoker or being in the same room with one. It has been found out that second-hand smoke contains a higher percentage of these carcinogens than what a smoker inhales.

When a smoker lits a cigar, he releases a lethal whiff of smoke which can be breathed in by those who are around him including his family and friends. Since it contains a higher concentration of the carcinogens, then the people who have inhaled second hand smoke has a very much higher chance of having lung cancer, heart disease, nasal sinus cancer, stroke, middle ear infections in children, as well as negative effects on the cognitive and behavior development.
