After You Quit
Rewarding Yourself
Most people who smoke look at the cigarette as an object of enjoyment, a reward for putting up with a difficult boss, studying for a big final exam, or dealing with a stressful family situation. The cigarette is something to be enjoyed, savored and look forward to. When the cigarette is taken away, along with all the physical symptoms that go along with the lack of nicotine in the system, so is the reward.
Rewarding yourself for dealing with difficult situations, including quitting smoking, is not only important, it’s necessary. It is vital that new non-smokers get in the habit of rewarding themselves when they deal with any type of stressful situation without smoking. Here are some things you can try:
Take a Walk - This might not seem like a reward at first, but getting out into nature and releasing some of those endorphins helps you deal proactively with stress and helps counteract some of the negative effects stress can have in the body.
Call a Friend – Talking through your cravings with a good friend can help give you more confidence and possibly change your perspective about the situation.
Have a Snack – Get some dark chocolate chips and have one or two when you are weak. The chocolate addiction is a good bit healthier for you and a bit easier to put down.
Go on an Outing – As long as you aren’t going to the local bar, an outing might be just the thing you need to let go of a stressful day. Visit the park, the lake or your favorite restaurant. Take the kids to the zoo or playground.
Hit the Gym – The exercise will do you good, and gym time is me time, unless you have a personal trainer shouting in your face.
Read a Good Book – This can be the most relaxing of all, depending on what book you pick up. Keeping a small book in your car or purse can serve as a mini-oasis when you need to escape for 5 or 10 minutes.
Use this list as a starting point. Most of us have little things that we enjoy that are unique to each individual. Of course check with your doctor before trying any exercise or activity.
The biggest reward is your better health; this is a reward you give to your family and to yourself. Enjoy your new status as a non-smoker and reward yourself accordingly.
