Aside from the $1.0066 federal tax on cigarettes per pack in the United States, each state has levied anywhere from 17 cents to $4.35 additional tax on cigarettes. Here is a rundown of cigarette tax in each state by rank:

| South Dakota | 1.53 | Georgia | 0.37 |
| Texas | 1.41 | Louisiana | 0.36 |
| Iowa | 1.36 | Virginia | 0.30 |
| Florida | 1.339 | Missouri | 0.17 |
Washington D.C. has a tax rate of $2.50 per pack. This list was compiled from three sources,
tobaccofreekids.org, National Conference of State Legislatures (ncsl.org), and Tax Foundation (taxfoundation.org), but may not be up to date with the latest legislative changes in your state. Check with your state legislative body for the exact tax levied.
In most cases the revenue generated from these taxes goes to pay for tobacco use prevention programs; however some states with budget shortfalls have used these funds to cover the difference. Anti-tobacco lobbyists have voiced concern over such usage of funds, and some have filed petitions regarding the practice.
It’s clear the trend for cigarette tax in the US is up. Many states are raising their per pack tax in order to discourage smoking. Analysts report that the medical cost per pack is well over $7.00 a pack, and no state has dared raise taxes that high … yet.
